“Shift your Shopping” is a slogan being used by groups asking consumers to shift from the mindset of big box or online shopping to supporting local businesses.

Neighborhood toy stores are reaping the benefits of these campaigns. “The American Specialty Toy Retailing Association (ASTRA) announced that nearly two-thirds of ASTRA stores participating in Neighborhood Toy Store Day on Saturday, November 8th reported an increase in their year-over-year same store sales. 25% posted growth of 20% or more.”

Consumers are realizing that local toy retailers are more than just stores – they are a central part of a vital community. Jonny Girson, a McManemin customer in the Kansas City area was recently mentioned in a story in The Wall Street Journal. The emphasis of the article was how by providing personal customer service and specialty perks, the local toy retailer creates a niche that can’t be filled by large retailers.
